IWR Signs MOU with National Autonomous University of Mexico

ALEXANDRIA, VA—November 18, 2010. IWR and the International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWaRM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and its Water Network on November 3, 2010. The purpose of the agreement is to promote research and capacity building, develop technical activities and foster networking between the organizations. IWR/ICIWaRM and UNAM intend to pursue cooperative opportunities in integrated water resources management, modeling tools, river engineering, environmental restoration, and capacity building and training. This agreement was singed by IWR and ICIWaRM Director Robert A. Pietrowsky and UNAM General Secretary Sergio M. Alcocer Martínez de Castro.

Following the signing ceremony, IWR/ICIWaRM personnel attended the First International Meeting on Wetlands hosted by UNAM and the National Water Commission (CONAGUA). A U.S. government interagency wetlands team participated in the meeting. Representatives from the Corps included staff from IWR/ICIWaRM and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). The meeting, which was held November 4–5 on UNAM’s Mexico City campus, brought together experts on wetlands from around the world. It focused on wetlands inventory, assessment, monitoring and management.

This partnership with UNAM furthers IWR and ICIWaRM’s commitment to fostering integrated water resources management around the world. ICIWaRM is a UNESCO Category 2 water center headquartered at IWR. The overall mission of ICIWaRM is the advancement of the science and practice of integrated water resources management to address water security and other water-related challenges by regional and global action. The UNAM Water Network generates, stores, distributes and analyzes knowledge on water issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. It has been organized by the community of UNAM to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the development of joint efforts to deal with the country’s water issues through an outstanding capacity to tackle complex national problems.
